Thread subject: Just when I thought.....

Marie 06/15/05 02:49 am You'll never guess, the breeding season isn't over yet. I watched the white storks in Germany late this hour and the two were on their nest. I couldn't see the last remaining egg that was very obvious last week. The male sat for a while beside his mate who I thought was incubating still. She got up and started preening...no egg. Then the male stood up and appeared very interested in the nest bowl( rather shallow one) but I couldn't see anything. He seemed to listen and poke around while she continued her feather care.....if there was a small chick hatched in there I certainly couldn't see one. All of a sudden he flew up onto her back and started to copulate. He is bigger than her and nearly knocked her down . Classic pose and position. Now I would have thought it was way too late for that activity... guess his testosterone is still flowing big time.
Good breakfast reading all you early birds! ;-)
Barbara Mc 06/15/05 06:51 pm Marie - I don't know anything about storks but if you go to Mariewinn.com her web site is all about red tail hawks and Central Park. When PaleMale and Lola's eggs failed to hatch this year they started to copulate again. John Blakeman (hawk expert) reports on the web site that this is not unusual behavior for hawks when the nest fails. It is called displacement. But hawk breeding season is over; there would be no more eggs.Scrounge around for John Blakeman's comments, somewhere towards the end of May. Maybe it's the same story for storks.
Tim P 06/15/05 10:04 pm Thanx Barb, I was going to mention this same thought to Marie as I read the Marie Winn site often. I have been watching the stork nest in hopes that the last remaining egg would hatch.
Maries information may be good news for a second chance.
Marie 06/16/05 01:56 am Thanks Barbara. I do check in to that site fairly often. I was disappointed that there were no chicks this year but I would imagine all that nest trauma had some bearing on their breeding season this year. Pale Male is getting on in years. I wonder if that makes a difference in reproductivity. Just checked the storks again tonight. I can't see the last egg. Wonder where it went? Only one stork at the nest.
Second egg of the loon in Alaska hasn't hatched yet...perpetual daylight there now. Perhaps in the morning it will hatch.
Celeste 06/16/05 05:26 am I checked the Pale Male site, and they have two chicks and are waiting for the 3 rd egg to hatch....the first chick was born June 2nd!
Marie 06/16/05 09:41 am Celeste, unless I am reading it all wrong, the birds on that ledge is not Pale male. It is one of his off spring with a mate. Those chicks are pale male JR's young. Great picks non the less. RED TAILED HAWKS according to my bird biblee breed only once in a season which means if Lola and The mighty Pale Male aren't sucessful with their eggs then it is too late this year to try again. They may copulate repeatedly but doubtful if eggs will be laid. What else is there to do on a sunny afternoon in Central Park. ;-))
Celeste 06/16/05 02:10 pm oops....sorry! :))
Tina 06/16/05 04:56 pm Sorry, my English is not good, but I hope you can understand me. I'm from Germany and I have been watching the stork nest for the last months. If you like to read more about what happened there: there is an english section and here are the latest news: http://www.storchennest.de/forum/viewtopic.php?p=185355#185355
The last egg was thrown out a few days ago.
Cecilia 06/16/05 04:58 pm Thank you Tina. Sorry to hear about the last egg:-(
Celeste 06/16/05 07:19 pm Thank you Tina....how distressing to hear of all the troubles these birds have had......so sorry. Oh and your English is fine! Hope you will participate on this site too!
