Whilst Betty was shading her chicks from the hot sun yesterday, the Bassenthwaite female spent most of the day shielding her young from the freezing rain and cold.
We have had 3 days of cold wet weather in the north - on Monday it was only 10C and today is only a little warmer.
The problem with Bassenthwaite is that heavy rain brings a lot of silt into the lake and the male cannot fish there. He has to travel to smaller pools that are not fed by streams, and which are at a much higher altitude.
But the ospreys deal with the weather and local conditions, just as the Brookhaven ones do. Amazing how a species can adapt. |

When it is cold and rainy here I find it very difficult to watch the nest, though I keep reminding myself that this is happening all over the world, and this bird has been around for millions of years. Yes, it is truly amazing. |

Ospreys seem to be very tolerant and adaptable to all sorts of inclement weather......
It is the little ones that seem to suffer in the rainy, cold, windy weather. Like Celeste says I find it very difficult to watch in those conditions. |
