Well the chicks have now had 4 fish in the space of an hour and a half. They dident really want the last one, but forced themselves, and then collapsed in a heap! Is there such a thing as an obese osprey chick? |

Make that 5 in 2 hours - Betty just collected another headless fish and the chicks dragged themselves up for yet another feed. Dennis's productivity is phenomenal today. |

Anne I think the last fish was part of the same one she had all the time in her talon. She just flies off with it and then returns. |

So adorable, chicks passed out in belly bliss on a hot afternoon! |

This morning when I was watching the chicks waddle around the nest I was wondering how chubby can these chicks get......It's wonderful if it will continue, though fledging might take a little longer, but the reserves will be good for migration! |

Yes...it's great! So... they take a little longer to fledge...like CZ, remember? She weighed too much to get her tushy off the nest :-) |

Sorry, I dident see the fish in her talon when she flew off. However, what amazed me was the fact that the chicks were ready for more when she came back. Only minutes before they had collapsed, absolutely stuffed! |

lots of fish at this stage is a good thing :)
As I recall, Dennis should start bringing less fish towards fledging time approaches yes? |

Yes Mickey. Its how they get them lazy kids off their butts and get their own food. :) |

Yes...Mickey, Poole says that, ""food deliveries level off when young are about 30 days old. There is a curious drop in the number of fish delivered to nests just before young fledge (age 40-55 days) and a rise about 15 days after that. Chicks also lose weight just before fledging; maybe their parents withhold food to encourage nest departure."
So...I just did the math and "our" chicks are are only 27 and 25 days old. Doesn't seem possible does it? Seems like they are older to me:-) Anyway..this is when they should be bulking up because Dennis may be cutting back in a few days. This week may be the last hurrah! BUT...has anyone told Dennis the "pre-fledging" theory? |
