Thread subject: Dangling osprey followup
Name Date Message
Melanie 08/02/06 11:05 pm I got home tonight to 95 degrees at 10 pm – it wasn’t much cooler in Vermont even though we were not far from the Canadian border.

First off – a follow-up on the osprey chick who got caught in rope and dangled upside down – I have been talking with the gal who wrote the story – she went on the Eagle chick trip - I did find out that several places were called and were met with little response – the local SPCA, the County Animal Control, the state Department of Natural Resources, and they did not know about calling Fish & Wildlife until the reporter got involved, but by then the fire station came out and made the rescue. Unfortunately the leg was too damaged and the chick did not last 24 hours at the rescue center. Both she and I are (gingerly) trying to find out why there was such a lack of response.

I have some notes to share on being in Vermont, but that will have to wait until tomorrow. I really can’t wait to sleep in my own bed and on top of that, I have a cat who is demanding that I make amends for abandoning him for 5 days even though he was spoiled rotten and fed too many treats while I was gone.
DaisyG 08/03/06 04:40 am Aww what sad news, such a shame for that poor chick....I don't know why, but I got it into my head it was an adult. Thanks for that followup Melanie. I have cats too, six of them, so know what you mean. I look forward to hearing notes on your trip.
Anne 08/03/06 05:42 am Oh the poor Osprey, thats a terrible end to a young life. At least they tried though.
FOB Webmaster 08/03/06 07:45 am I'm glad you're looking into the response, Melanie. It's a bit disturbing to find such a lack of caring, especially from groups like the SPCA. I mean that's like the Humane Society saying "Well, we don't care."
