Thread subject: Some detective work

||joe Sat Apr 21 9:28 am check out the eagle site, http://www.neenergyinc.com/eagles/live/eagles_popup_100.asp
joe/mack/srfam....Im sure if DPOF looks up their isp`s they will be our present trouble makers and maybe they can just ban the ip.

||What exactly does this mean? All I get is a blank screen video.
||05/10/07 06:18 am
||Curiosity killed the cat! I have just tried to get onto this site, which was also mentioned yesterday on the Obs Bd, but I too get a blank screen. I hope I havent got a virus now!
||05/10/07 09:25 am
||No virus - that site has frequent access problems.
||05/10/07 09:32 am
||thank you for explaining to the paranoia group Mel.
Shame on me for trying to help you overseas folks out.
It wont happen again.
||05/10/07 09:54 am
||Mickey - what is your problem? All we said was that we got a blank screen for goodness sake. I was not getting at you when I said I hoped I hadent got a virus!
People who I know and respect have warned me many times that the DP Obs Bd is extremely insecure. OK, maybe I am paranoid about virus's, but so would you be if you knew what had happened to my son's computer and the consequences for his family. I know I should avoid the Obs Bd - but l am addicted like everybody else on here.
Finally, thank you Melanie for explaining that the eagle cam site is genuine. I did run a full check straight away and I was OK.

||My problem simply put is you Anne. I dont mince words. You basically accused me of giving you a virus from the URL I posted. And dont worry.I dont expect a apology.
Lets do each other a favor for the good of the group and ignore each other from now on. Those people that have warned you about the insecurity of the DPOF obs board are wrong. The ONLY insecure thing about it is you can be any name you like. You cant be hurt by reading it or posting to it.And thats a fact !!!
||05/10/07 10:12 am
||One thing you shouldn't do is open a LINK/ addy from someone who is posting on the OBS board as Anne UK. I thought we had established that the TROLL is using several peoples ID's and Anne UK is one of them! To post a web link that could contain a virus is the natural thing to do for this IDIOT.
No Anne UK, the real one, I am not calling you an idiot !!
This activity on the obs board is most frustrating. Lets hope the powers to be get to the bottom of this real soon!
||05/10/07 10:13 am
||Show me the words where I accuse you.
||05/10/07 10:17 am
||"I hope I havent got a virus now!"
Though you didnt mention my name, the accusation is there plain as day light.
||05/10/07 10:28 am
||Your perception of my words is not my perception.
As I said - I was curious and I went on the site, not understanding what you meant by joe/mack/srfam. If I had got a virus it would have been the imposters fault not yours.
My throw away line 'I hope I havent got a virus' was a dig at myself for being so stupid as to take the bait dangled by the imposter.
||05/10/07 10:34 am
||Come on Mickey & Anne...stop it. We have enough problems right now. We certainly don't need need trusted, valuable and committed observers like you two going at each other. I didn't open that site either Mickey because I didn't understand what it was. Since your first line was, "joe Sat Apr 21 9:28 am check out the eagle site," it was confusing. Looking back now I'm thinking that you must have been answering a question that Joe asked, maybe about eagles?
Anyway, I don't think Anne was accusing you, she was just worried because it came up weird. We're all paraniod at this point. And some of us have a lot more computer experience than others so what may seem normal to me might make someone else nervous.
Please kiss and make up...it's us against "them"...not us against us!
||05/10/07 10:34 am
||At this time people's guard should be on HIGH ALERT.
See what is happening right now...........
This IDIOT has created tention between the regular posters so he/she has achieved the very purpose '' ít' set out to do.
So lets get back to being nice to one another.
The way I see it Mickey, is that I would say the very same thing as Anne has done. If I had actually gone to that site and found it contained nothing but a BLANK. No picture etc. It was not a criticism of you or a blame statement.
Between the lines it is a statement of 'HOW DUMB CAN I BE". That is my opinion only and not a criticism of anyone.
||05/10/07 11:14 am
||Indeed. The idiot is getting just what they hoped for. I see more silly posts on the obs board today and my reaction is to just not bother any more. But that's playing into the silly person's hands isn't it. So if I observe something I shall post an ob. I think we're all smart enough to work out what's genuine and what's just to be ignored.
I do think though that perhaps the powers that be should look at setting up a proper registration system for the obs board, the same as we have on here.
I knew what Mickey was saying in his original post. I thought it was a good idea - if the IP of that poster can be tracked from the posts then it can presumably be barred, which I guess is what we'd all like. I also think Anne was just worried about the link but not in any way pointing the finger of blame at Mickey. So some misunderstandings, but surely not anything that can't be sorted out.
Time to count to ten I reckon. We're a mixed bunch on here but we get along fine most of the time. Let's show the silly people who want to cause trouble that we're not going to fall into their traps.
And yes Marie - I did realise you weren't calling me an idiot :)

||Just to put people's minds at ease - in order to get a virus from visiting a website you would have to download and install something on your computer. Even spyware has to be downloaded and installed.
When someone says the site is not secure, in this case it means that anyone can post on the observations board without authentication, that there is no username and password to access it. Unless a site contains sensitive information like bank accounts, credit card numbers or social security numbers, it really doesn't matter one whit on the user end of a site whether or not it is secure. We know there are firewalls in place as Marie found out earlier this year when she got blocked out, but in that case the security is to protect the server from unauthorized access, meaning to protect the contents. To make a blanket statement that "the site is not secure" skews things out of perspective because a site not being secure applies to probably 90% of the sites people visit every day. It's nothing to panic over. The only thing you can download from this site is the donation form and that's a PDF. I may be a Mac-head at heart, but I still have to take care of all the computers in the office PLUS maintain several websites and email accounts for the past 8 years, so I do have some experience with this.
||05/10/07 02:25 pm
I now know a little more about '' puters '' that can be a whole lot of frustration for people like me.
When the media reports periodically that hackers have hacked into secure sites you'll never get me to believe that all is well on the net.
||05/10/07 05:57 pm
||Lets assume for a brief moment that someone hacked into the server that runs this site at BNL. What info could a hacker possibly gleam from such a act? Your IP? Your password? I'm sure most people dont know what goes on at BNL. Your IP and password would be the very very last thing a hacker would want if they got into a BNL server LOL. In some buildings or areas on the BNL properties, people must wear nuclear detection cards. If I recall correctly this is where they were trying to split atoms or some such non-sense I could never understand. It was a running joke around Long Island for many years over the stink the public put up over the Shoreham Nuclear power plant and its closing because people realized Long Island could never be evacuated if there was a accident,while all along just 7 miles away was the BNL that had been up and running for 20 years before the plant ever was thought of. Out of all the servers in the world, I think your msg board password is as safe as nuclear secrets *wink*
||05/10/07 06:42 pm
||I think you're so right Mickey... BNL is a world class scientific research institute with the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN). Just the names are scary enough. Who knows what they do there. But the bottom line is that the DPOF server is probably about as important to anyone who would hack into their operation as their caffeteria coffee machine would be:-) I think we're safe!

||Melanie, thanks for the information regarding virus'. I'm always more than a bit cautious about opening anything I'm not familiar with, but I still get nervous at times.
Your explanations were much appreciated, as I usually don't hesitate to open things you folks here on DPOF mention. With all the "lurkers" popping in on the obs board I was beginning to hesitate to write or open anything for awhile. Even after a year on the internet, I still get nervous, so thanks once again Melanie!! :-))
