Back when the 1st egg was laid on April 16th, Melanie & Mare mention these names for the chick, BUT is this the first egg that hatched? I thought the 1st egg was the darkest one? |

egg #1 did not hatch this morning.
And you`re right. It is the darkest of all 3 eggs Nancy.
It sounded like you had a great day yesterday.WTG! |

We don't know yet. We will have to wait and see what hatches. Last year there was a great deal of mystery because one of the eggs did not hatch there was a great deal of discussion over which egg it was (in the laying order). Perhaps she's playing with us again this year. |

Mel said it all. At least this year we know the dark egg was first laid.

I nominate this name for the first chick: #1 (first to hatch).

I understand the desire to want to nominate names now.And I do believe this is the quickest of any year for this subject. *gold stars to you all*
But heres the reasons we wait to have the naming suggestions:
1.If we name a chick now and it dies then that name has negativeness applied to it forever.
2. As the chicks continue to grow, we usually get a feeling for each chicks spirit and demeanor.
Waiting to name them has always worked for the group as a whole.(well except Tim LoL)

I know that the first egg laid appeared to be the darkest of the three, and I know the egg that hatched did not appear to be the darkest of the three.
I also know that eggs from this nest seem to hatch at around 38-39 days (thanks to the wonderful summary Mickey gave us a while back). And I know that yesterday was day 39 for the first egg and day 36 for the second egg.
So I guess I'm wondering if the eggs could change real or apparent color over time.
And, of course, it's only day 40 for the first egg - and the CT eggs seem to be hatching at around 40 days (unless their first one is non-viable, which we won't know for a while).
I do like the idea of using their hatch numbers as names at least for a while. And if names are agreed upon later, I'd like to request that an announcement of that be put in the obs thread before people start referring to them by name instead of number - it got very confusing for me last year before I managed to make my way through the messages to learn where #1, #2 and #3 had gone! :) |

Hi Judy. Every year when the chicks were named it was by popular democratic vote. No one just said heres their names and thats it. In fact last year some folks said that next year they wouldnt mind the names being numbers. That was brought on by some folks saying the names were to Americanized. Which IMO was poppycock. Anyways,I havent gone back to look when the names were voted on but I seem to remember last week of June first week in July. But I could be wrong. So its way to early and theres a ton of stuff that can happen in that nest before we even think of names *wink*
I think we all agree that egg 1 hasnt hatched yet and is the very dark one. Eventhough our view is close to black+white egg #1 hasnt changed drastically in color.
If I were to bet money I`d say egg #1 wasnt fertilized. One might argue the weather did it in but then why didnt the weather effect #2? But Im just rambling :)
Look at chick ! now! so effin cute ! |

Well, you missed my point, Mickey. It's really very simple. I agree with Tim. Numbers and no names. Of course, I realize that this chat list has a culture that built up before I came here, and many will probably fill up a lot of space (doing that already) nominating, voting, arguing, recounting history, etc., but it just seems more scientific and less sentimental to me to refer to the chicks in the order of hatching, especially at this early stage. I do not wish to discuss this further. I simply wanted to be on record. Of course, I am not trying to keep you or anyone else from discussing to your heart's content.
