This osprey seems in fine condition and looks very confident. Have we ever seen it before?
Could it be a chick from 2006? |

It just brought in a stick so could this be a male with a slight necklace of dark feathers on its chest. As you said it looks like it knows this nest, but who knows it could be one just passing through on its way to somewhere else. Yes who were the chicks from 2006 again...I know you would know Tiger so I don't have to look it up. ;-) |

Funky feet sure suggests this family, but I can't be sure about anything at this stage. Was 2006 my first year watching? That would be Flag, Stripe, and Star, then. Whatcha think, Tiger? You are the identificaiton expert. At least, you keep the most complete files.

Yes this osprey does appear to be confident about it's surroundings. looks to me that it is a female. |

The reference Daisy made re "funky feet" reminded me of last year's debate about identity ... there are a several threads ... Marty posted images here.
Unfortunately, can't link the search result ... so if you use the "Search Message Board" feature, "Select by message text" (make sure you change the year to 2008) and put in "funky feet" and then select "ascending", you'll come up with several threads. |

Yes 2006 was the year of Star, Stripe and the unforgettable Flag. |

Is this the same osprey? See Image |

Well then, this would be their first migration, and from what I've been reading here, they would be about a month behind the returning adults, right? This could be a chick from an even earlier year??

Are you thinking of Stripe Tiger? |

It has crossed my mind but a look at that image from last year suggests that might not be the case.
Marty the chicks from 2006 might be expected to come back last year. |

But it is also been suggested by Rob's blog, if I remember correctly, that some of the youngsters don't return for three years. |

Not sure now, Tiger, if it's the same one ... the necklace on the osprey image you posted looks a bit darker than that of the images posted in the previous thread. |

Now this is probably really out there ... but could it be Dennis 08? Going through some of the images Sir Lance posted, kinda looks like him, especially in this capture.

And then there's this image posted last year by Tiger. |

Kelly I was thinking the same. we got to remember there is a big gap in our knowledge. We did not really get to know the new Dennis properly. |

Yeah, that's the bummer! |

I think we just have to wait and see what transpires. I for one am just happy to have seen that wonderful sight...an OSPREY on the DPOF nest again...at last! :) |
| Celeste |
03/14/09 02:15 pm |
Yes it's wonderful and thank you as always DPOF!
(I am beginning to think I "see" the cam better when there is sound but believe me I am not complaining...seeing an osprey on the first day of the cam was great! :-) |

Not at all Tiger. |

We will not be seeing chicks from previous years returning to the area for at least another month. |

Yes, that's what Rob said, too. So whoever that was today must be a breeding adult in age.

As I recall, the 08 female was also very dark? The only thing I remember about the new Dennis was his head marking - very similar to Betty's but much bolder. So I guess we wait for someone to get a capture of the back of his/her head.
I'm just so excited to have the cam back and now with sound. I hadn't realised how much I'd missed it. Many thanks to the team :) |

Sigh... they all look alike to me... ;-)
I am just over the moon to have the cam back, though, whoever they are!
