| Melanie | 08/11/09 04:28 pm | Read 'em if you got 'em. We don't know why the moms go first - they just do. Betty has traditionally left around the second week of August. The dads generally leave soon after the beginning of September which is when their fishing detail has been completed. The chicks get a bit confused when they discover they are all alone and they will hang around for a little bit until some internal clock kicks in and they take that leap of faith where they have no idea of where they are going or why. Expect to see sporadic chicks on and off the nest in September - they will not necessarily be Freedom and Liberty - they will be from other nests making their way south and using it as a stopover. |

(almost done with the Poole book :-) BTW, the juvie looks SO different in its stance with its tail feathers spread and it's wings in a different position. Do you know if this is just a natural part of thier age? Or if there's a reason. I haven't seen this before (on cam now) |
| Melanie | 08/11/09 09:19 pm | Sounds like they are practicing mantling which is a common way of protecting their space and/or food. It also can be a defensive posture that makes them look bigger and more intimidating. |

| Liz | 08/12/09 03:37 pm | Melanie, good thought. It didn't look like mantling to me, but maybe it's an additional way of mantling with their tail that they're learning? There wasn't any food when I saw it, unless it was space. As for Mickey's joke, I think I missed something! |
