Shelley 04/09/04 12:43 pm Something is happening. The nest is empty (except for the eggs). I can see some large birds (must be osprey but I can't tell for sure) flying back and forth off in the distance. What would cause BEtty to abandon the nest without leaving Dennis behind to cover for her?
Barbara 04/09/04 12:52 pm Shelley - I don't know if we're the only ones watching, but this is scary.
Shelley 04/09/04 12:57 pm Yes, it is! I just saw one osprey on the nest, calling alot but not touching the eggs. If it was Betty, she should have instinctively sat back down on the eggs, I'd think. If it was Dennis, wouldn't he have sat on them as well, if Betty was not there? If it was the third osprey, the intruder, who the heck was s/he calling? Did s/he instinctively know that these eggs did not belong to him/her and that's why s/he wouldn't touch them? The call sounds the same but it did turn into a kind-of cackle at the very end. Maybe that's the tell-tale sign that it is the third osprey. Has this ever happened before, a nest takeover? Even if an intruder takes over and ousts Betty and Dennis, would it destroy the eggs and lay its own? Does anyone know?
Shelley 04/09/04 12:58 pm OH! One of them is back, sitting!! Thank goodness!
