Thread subject: Question on fledging and a chicks weight
Name Date Message
RonS 07/05/04 08:52 pm In watching, and hearing, CZ's frustration in trying to get airborne, I remember reading somewhere in the past two years that parents will sometimes withhold food in order to control a chick's weight for fledging. Has anyone read anything about this actually causing a problem for a fledgling?
Celeste 07/05/04 09:17 pm Wow, Ron, I was just about to post a similar thought when I saw yours a couple of minutes before me. I was re-reading obs from last year, and as you know, Chick 2 fledged first, and when Chick 1 fledged, it never stayed away from the nest as much as Chick 2 did. My thought was if it has ever been noted that the 2 or 3rd chick fledges first because they get less food in general (pecking order) thus they weigh less and are the first to fledge. I was wondering if DPOF could enlighten us or anyone else? I would think the heavier the bird, the more "strength" is needed for that first "lift off".
Tiger 07/05/04 09:19 pm I thought that the witholding of fish was to encourage them to fledge. The idea that it might be weight control measure is new to me.

If it was to do with weight control why wasn't Betty putting Cz on a diet over the last week?

RonS 07/06/04 09:58 am Tiger, as usual you are spot on with your logic. Maybe Betty's nuture gene is too strong for her to ignore CZ.
I was thinking more along the lines of Celeste that more weight needs more lift. Just watching CZ flap at a slower rate than Spirit brought to mind an out-of-shape athlete trying in vain to make the grade.
