Cecilia 07/13/04 04:05 pm Thanks Melanie...what a great shot of those eyes!
Shelley 07/13/04 04:20 pm Melanie, thank you so much for this!! I copied the text that was below that exquisite photo, for its message is the very one we have discussed here recently:

"Biologist Peter McGowan from the Chesapeake Bay field Office of the US Fish & Wildlife Service and I recently surveyed approximately 75 Osprey nests from the Middle River to the South River.

We found an alarming amount of fishing line, wire, old net, balloon ribbons, frayed rope & plastic debris in their nests that was picked up by parent Ospreys for nesting material. These items become potentially fatal to Osprey chicks. (I actually unwrapped several chicks that were entangled.)

Our message is to "Please discard these items onshore in appropriate containers,i.e., trash cans and try to retrieve as much fishing line as possible when snagged."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sadly, those of us who do heed the warnings and understand the dangers of such human carelessness, are not the ones who need to be reading this... :-(
Thanks again for posting that
