Shelley 07/19/04 10:30 am I noticed on one of the links that Tiger (I believe) posted recently, there had been mention that the female ospreys can be identified by having darker chest feathers.

We here had all noted that Spirit's chest was the only one which appeared pure white and now I've been paying closer attention to the other two. I think I can see what they mean. Whoever is standing at the 3 o'clock position right now, is either CZ or Peace. She has a slightly darker patch across her breast, sort-of like where (pardon me, gentlemen, you may cover your eyes if you wish) a bra might be.....

Is that an image...or what?! LOL
Marie 07/19/04 04:48 pm LOL...Shelly... ;-)) we call that area of darkened feathers the Lady's NECKLACE...
Shelley 07/19/04 05:12 pm Oooooohhhh! THAT'S the necklace that's always referred to?? (smacks forehead) DUH!

I didn't realize. I thought the *neck*lace was a bit higher up, closer to the neck....I guess *birdbra* just doesn't have a very scientific ring to it, does it...?

:-D
Tiger 07/19/04 05:20 pm Hi Shelley.

Is this what you mean?

Shelley 07/19/04 06:22 pm I guess so but the one in this picture is much darker and more obvious than what I observe on Peace and CZ. Theirs is much lighter and almost blends in with the white. If Spirit wasn't so pure white in comparison, I am not even sure I'd be noticing it at all. Could also be because they are so young and perhaps it will darken to look like this picture you posted, as the rest of their colouration changes with maturity, as well.

Thanks
Dave S 07/19/04 08:10 pm The bird in the picture is a very extreme example of the female "necklace". If you get a good look at the adult female at this nest, it is not quite as prominent. However, the young chicks have the necklace and it is easy to see when they face the camera. To be fair to Tiger's reference, the resolution on the camera has been turned down to allow a reasonable video stream at the bandwidth we have, so it is hard to get a good comparison.
