Thread subject: Another difference...
Name Date Message
Marie 07/22/04 05:09 pm I was amased at the reference in 'Return of the Osprey' that DG alludes to when comparing the differences between male and female ospreys. It appears that Males have a broader dark brown bandit- band across the eyes than the female. Sure enough I checked this out in my recent photos of the ospreys together in the nest. It is true so we now have another clue to observe for when the juveniles are in the nest together. Spirit, if indeed he is male, should sport a wider band than those of the females. In other words his mask is fuller and covers a greater part of his face. Are we right in assuming the other two are females?
Shelley 07/22/04 06:13 pm Well, the chest neckalace alone seems to have worked for us so far, I believe. If this is yet another ID marker, then all the better!
Marie 07/22/04 09:37 pm Certainly, Shelley that necklace is a sure way to tell the girls from the boys. Thought I would share another possible difference, beside the actual size difference when the male and female are in the nest together.
Tiger 07/23/04 04:50 am Marie asked me to post the following picture to show the difference between male and female!

It shows the masks well.
