Marie 10/17/04 09:39 pm Great video continues of this little family( Peregine Falcon) from Brisbane Australia. What is so interesting is the non-violent behaviour of these chicks toward the little male, Pippin. Lots of very interesting information about Peregrine Falcons on this site. Another great phrase when talking to your friends about BIRDS and you want to impress is 'Reversed size DIMORPHISM.' in other words this is the phrase you use when describing the larger size of the female raptor to that of the male. ;-)
Celeste 10/18/04 05:45 am The information about the falcons is great. I found the fact that the female "wears the pants in the family" funny. Interestingly, though the mortality of the chicks when they fledge(60-80%), was lessened if they choose a building for a nest. If a chick falls to the ground they can be rescued and rehabbed. Each year in New York City, we have peregrine falcons who make a nest.....the website for that --http://www.55water.com/falcons/index.html They have been there for years. The New York City Board of Education is located at 55 Water Street.
Dorothy 10/19/04 04:41 pm Frieda, the mom, is very attentive to 4th chick "Pippin" isn't she! In fact, his 3 big sisters are completely non-aggressive toward him and each other for that matter. Even during feeding times, little Pippin gets right up to mom and demands his share. I'm bettng Pippin will be the first to fledge -- being the only male even though he's the youngest.
