Thread subject: My Visit To Wertheim
Name Date Message
Celeste 04/30/04 05:01 pm As a sudden thought today, my husband and I made a trip to Wertheim and I saw the osprey nest on the path from the visitor's center. Not sure where exactly the nest was, (last summer I started to walk that path and we were "chased" by bees), I was wondering if I was in the right place, until I heard the familiar "chirp". My husband looked up and saw the male osprey bringing a fish in his talons to the nest. We also saw the female stand and stretch her wing. There were other osprey in the distance gliding above us. Sometimes I was wondering as quiet as my husband and I were, if we were "bothering" them with our presence. I didn't expect to see as much activity as I did especially since there are no chicks yet. I was thrilled beyond words to witness all this osprey activity. For those of you who don't know, Wertheim is 2500 acres. In driving around "exploring" we were driving west on Montauk Highway on a very commercial area, busy with trucks, cars etc. I happened to glance at the drivers side of the car at the refuge and suddenly, I couldn't believe my eyes, an osprey must have just caught a fish and was soaring to the air with his catch, fish head first!!!!!! I screamed so loud in the car my husband hit the brakes, but he saw it too! From my experience last summer at Bayard's, the truly best time to observe a nest in person will be right before the chicks fledge. I felt lucky today that I saw anything, cause as we know, when the hen is sitting, you really can't see from the ground if there is even an osprey in the nest unless she moves or stands! Which once again how lucky we are to have a view as we get into the nest with the cam. What's special in person, is the size of their wings, and how they glide in the sky and for me the first time ever seeing an osprey with a fish in its mouth! A perfect day indeed!
