Celeste 05/01/04 07:15 am 1. Osprey are long distance migrants and have been clocked at 80mph

2. flying ospreys have "crooked" wings. They will flap their wings a lot and hover in place while fishing. From a distance they can look like large gulls.

3. Their alarm calls are a series of loud notes that become more drawn out. When they are disturbed near the nest their calls rise in pitch and up to 20 calls can be heard in 6 seconds.

4.Osprey will tolerate colonies of other osprey during the winter and the breeding season. Nests sometimes can be closed together, but usually are more scattered. It has been observed that osprey will rarely fish at the same time as other osprey. Most hunting is done in mid morning and late afternoon. They eat herring, trout, carp, menhaden, perch, pike, pickerel, salmon and hornpout. Fish are carried headfirst cause they are usually caught from the rear otherwise they will turn the fish around in the air. They even will wash their feet by gliding low over the water, almost touching it, and dip and drag their feet to clean off the fish slime.

5. Hot summer temperatures can make downy chicks uncomfortable and the chicks will pant like dogs---the female will stand over them and shield them with her wings to cool the chicks.

6. The osprey is a peaceable neighbor to other species as we have seen. It is eagles that give them problems as an eagle will steal the fish an osprey has just caught in mid-air.

7. In the end, it is up to man that osprey attain their 20 year lifespan, not only because of DDT, but by preserving our prime fishing areas.

Thats it!!!! Have a great day!
