Thread subject: Making the NEST.....
Name Date Message
Valerie 05/01/04 02:09 pm Oh boy, Let me start by saying that I am a huge bird watcher an love all types.. but my reason for being here is about a pair of Osprey's ive been watching. Im so sad for this certain couple. They have been "trying" to build a nest for a few weeks now. Every time they get close to having a solid nest the dang thing falls apart. I can tell that the place they have chosen is not a very good place. A top a telephone pole.. but it has no stability. I am SO SO SO sad for this pair ..... Can someone please tell me why this may be happening to them? I wish I could do something to help.. but I know I cant...
any info would be great.. atleast something to help me feel better.. im so sad for them..

Thanks,...
Valerie....
Fred W. 05/01/04 02:53 pm Eventually they will probably learn the 'interlocking twig and stick technique',...
Keep watching and let us know of any permanency!
Valerie 05/01/04 03:10 pm Well, I certainly hope they do... I wonder if these are the same two that were in this same area last year. There was a board placed on the top of a pole near by, lasy year but for some reason someone took it down. I wish they would put it back... Crossing fingers they get it soon! thanks..

Celeste 05/01/04 03:37 pm The Book "Return of the Osprey" is a must read. It is written by David Gessner who lives in Cape Cod and spends his summers observing the different osprey nests in his area. He mentions a similar nest that just "didn't make it" and he concluded that the pair were "first time" breeders and were inexperienced. Ospreys will build on anything, windmills, telephone poles, electric towers, billboards, and even shipwrecks. He even mentions about a pair using an inactive construction crane. He says the urge to build a nest is instinctive, "tied to hormones" triggered by the warming weather, however, "skill in building increases with age and experience!
Valerie 05/01/04 04:02 pm Will get the book.. thank you so much, Celeste!
