Thread subject: Beak Mouth Open Breathing...
Name Date Message
Cecilia 05/07/04 03:45 pm Diane mentioned seeing Betty in the nest, earlier, breathing like she's hot - beak open. I see that she is still doing that at 3:43 and it isn't all the hot now; the clouds have come in. Does anyone remember her panting or breathing this way last year? My pet birds only do that when they are very stressed...scared or over heated. Interesting...
Cecilia 05/07/04 03:56 pm By the change over I just saw I think that it was Dennis who was breathing with his beak open, not Betty. Sorry :-) I have better luck figuring out who's who if I can see the pattern on the back of their heads or if they are standing together.
Dave S 05/07/04 07:19 pm The birds are panting because they are hot. They are in a bowl that is dark and protected from the wind and are in full sunlight. The sun on their dark feathers will heat them up to a very uncomfortable temperature, and as they get even warmer they will lift and spread their wings. They will also lift and spread their wings to shade the chicks once they hatch. Try sitting outside in a dark suit with the sun shining, even filtered through thin clouds!
Mickey 05/07/04 07:23 pm I deffinetly dont remember either adult doing the panting last year Cecilia. Is it possible that this is how they cool down like a dog does? They had much hotter humid days last year then today though. It may have been hot inland but at that nest it couldnt have been. The water temperatutre still must be in the 50`s. Last night sunset I also noticed alot of tiny feathers all in the nest. Maybe the adults are shedding? If they shed at all. I sure do miss the expert weekly commentaries :(
Mickey 05/08/04 10:20 am As I didnt watch this early last year, maybe the adults are coaxing the chicks out of their eggs. The 1st chick must be developed enough to hear and could hear the heavy panting.
