Thread subject: Ospreys calling

Nancy L 06/24/05 08:53 am I really wonder what the calls mean. Sometimes you see the osprey flying around in great circles, calling out.
Yesterday at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum, I watched the female in her nest, calling over & over (as when we say she's calling for her next meal), however, right in the next tree (about 20-25 feet away) was the male, just sitting there - not intending to go anywhere at all! One wonders what it all means?!
Mickey 06/24/05 09:36 am I dont think we`ll really ever know. When we say shes sitting calling for food,I think we`re afixing our humanisms to the situation. Im guilty of this too. Maybe next year we can each take our own survey and keep a log how many times he came with fish when you thought he would.
Marie 06/24/05 09:44 am Maybe HE has been sitting there on his favorite perch just too long. Those calls from what I have observed are to get HIM going for food, but it doesn't mean he will obey! . The ospreys here don't always respond either immediately........but they do eventually go fishing from what I have observed
CathyMeyer 06/24/05 10:05 am Has anyone else noticed that Dennis seems to deliver between 30 and 45 minutes after the hour? I'm not sure that it matters when Betty is calling, he seems to run a tight ship, ha. I've seen numerous posts at 38-39 minutes after and this morning was 7:44 AM. I'm sure he's been there many other times that were outside this range... this time frame just caught my eye.
Celeste 06/24/05 12:56 pm I think it is a food call.....and if the female "nags" enough, the male will FINALLY get the meal!
Mickey 06/24/05 01:49 pm lol @ nags enough !

it seems the female osprey and the female human do share certain characteristics *wink*
I venture to guess that if Dennis had the TV clicker he would use it :)
Melanie 06/24/05 02:11 pm Or perhaps Betty would simply toss it out of the nest (WEG)
Tiger 06/24/05 04:00 pm Yes but we know from observations elswhere that a good smack works even better than nagging!
Anne 06/24/05 04:22 pm My husband says he doesnt know which is the lesser of the two evils!
