Melanie 06/26/05 02:51 pm I think it was Friday that I saw Betty bring in a piece of board - it looked to be about 12"x10" when it arrived. Now it is quite a bit smaller. I have seen the chicks occasionally nibble at it just like they will other sticks in the nest, but since it is nowhere near the size it was, what is actually happening to it? Would the parents gnaw on it? I've never seen anything being broken off of it.

Matt, are you sitting up there with a whittling knife?
Matt 06/26/05 03:13 pm Why yes I am. If you look now the one edge pointing to the right looks like a little tail of a fish. Its not quite done yet, but the chicks think its a real fish.
cathy 06/26/05 06:18 pm The plank seems to be gone now.
Mickey 06/26/05 06:21 pm you are a sneaky craftsman Matt :)
CathyMeyer 06/26/05 06:55 pm Betty moved the larger board out of view of the cam into the lower left hand corner about 6:10 PM today(the hairbrush/paddle/gangplank). The other piece you see was also on the nest at the same time and looks like a ruler or a stick one would use to stir paint with. Maybe she's redecorating! The smaller piece was pointing to 3:00 position, now at about 2:00. Do you think all these playthings are to keep their attention in the nest and away from the edge before they are ready to fly? Makes you wonder what might show up next. These objects do seem to keep us all curious.
Cecilia 06/26/05 09:45 pm They just seem to love wood of any kind...bark, sticks, planks, branches, driftwood...what ever :-) I thought the hairbrush/paddle/gangplank looked like a small version of one of those Fraternity paddles. And that other thing does look like one of those stirring sticks that they give you at the paint store. No blue napkin or anything really exotic so far this year...but there's still time :-)
