Thread subject: Necklaces

||I've been sitting here having lunch with the cam on and watching Brook and Haven preening. Because of their positions I have a really good look at their chests and I'm prettty sure I can see necklaces on both of them...so maybe we do, indeed, have two females :-)

||It's possible, but I don't know how much we can trust the video feed for accuracy. I think there may be some distortion. The birds I handled that were older than ours all had gold necklaces and the true necklaces on the females were just barely beginning to come in buried underneath the gold. For example, this one was a female that is nearly a month ahead of ours - and the males have the same gold necklace. http://www.cbmmag.net/melanie/pics/459.jpg

||I have heard biologists say it can be difficult to determine if an osprey chick is male or female based on necklaces alone.

||Dont forget though that Brook and Haven have shown female traits throughout - non aggressive, getting along together, well mannered, obsessed with nest tidying, always preening, nagging - - - - - - :<):>)

||And having just seen Nancy L's last post - bossy and spiteful today!

||Anne have you been watching the same nest. Brook showed extreme agression early on when Chick #4 was around.
If you look at the observations you will find that I observed her attacking Betty on one occasion.
Brook is only non aggressive when things are fine bay her.

A thoroughly amazing feeding session. I joined it with Dennis feeding the chicks. Chick #1 launched a vicious attack on #4 and when #4 became submissive #1 attacked mum who was sitting at about the 12 o clock position.
Betty took over feeding from Dennis and fed mainly #1 and #2. Betty did offer some to #4 occasionaly but often fell short. At the end she did seem to actively feed #4.
