Thread subject: Osprey's IQ
Name Date Message
Tiger 07/11/05 06:21 pm Have you ever wondered how intelligent ospreys are?? I know that the Einsteins of the bird world are pigeons but how do you think ospreys compare?

Shelley 07/11/05 06:49 pm Pigeons? Not the pigeons we have here, Tiger. Are British pigeons different from our rock pigeons, who are definitely NOT rocket scientists, as far as I know...

I always thought crows were pretty smart....and osprey, to me, seems fairly clever, too. At least those I know!!
DaveS 07/11/05 07:13 pm Tiger got someone's goat! I think African Grey parrots are up there with Crows and Ravens.
Matt 07/11/05 07:21 pm Well if last year's third chick (Spirit) is any indication, I would say they're quite smart. Given that she (was it a she?) kept going around and behind Betty to feed herself earlier than normal and being the first to fledge and even take the fish with her, I would say she would have to have some intelligence to figure all that out. However you have to take into effect was it because she was smart or was it out of desperation for food as her other two siblings pecked the daylights out of her and kept her away from the food.
DaveS 07/11/05 08:29 pm Are we talking Osprey smart or avian smart? Tiger....
Marie 07/11/05 09:20 pm Just as Dave S has mentioned I had ALSO heard that Ravens, Crows and the African Grey PARROT are suppose to be the most intelligent ...even the JAY family has been suggested to have a considerable IQ.
As for Osprey, mmmmmmmm I think they have everything they need for reproduction, migration and ultimately survival for they have been on this earth for approximately 13 million years. Species Success is an indication of something....perhaps a bigger IQ than we give might like to admit to.
