Thread subject: Bathroom talk

||This may have been discussed last year but if it was, I can't really remember what the answer was. Celeste, Cec, maybe you can bring out those books....
We have all had the pleasure of witnessing the rockets firing. But do birds (as other animals) excrete both liquid and solid waste or is it a two-for-one deal? For lack of a more delicate term. And if the latter is the case, are they alone in the animal kingdom to do this?
Inquiring minds want to know...

|| Well I for one have never seen them use toilet roll ...

||Shelley it is all one combined process in birds. Both liquid and solid come out together ... this has a specific name but that I do not remember and no books at work.

||While we're on this topic, had to mention that I've found the backward walking to the edge of the nest to eliminate quite 'ferret like'. Anyone who has ever owned a ferret will notice the resemblance of the ferret tail in the air and running backwards. Ferrets however prefer a corner of their cage and hence the triangular plastic potty pans.

||I just looked it up:
cloaca - 2 [New Latin, from Latin] : the common chamber into which the intestinal, urinary, and generative canals discharge in birds, reptiles, amphibians, and many fishes; also : a comparable chamber of an invertebrate
Is this what you meant, Melanie?
||07/14/05 12:07 pm
||Thanks Mel! I knew there was a specific term just could not get it out of my brain ....
||07/14/05 01:24 pm
||I think the term, cloaca, also includes the opening from the digestive tract to the outside of the bird's body...hence the term, "The cloacal kiss"...that's when the male rubs his cloaca against the female's and deposits the sperm.
BNA calls the combination of urine and feces, "the cloacal fluid."
||07/14/05 04:52 pm
||Yup. Cloaca - it derives from the latin for sewer. Now isn't that just special?
||07/14/05 05:05 pm
||Hehe...it's all in the plumbing, isn't it, no matter who you are ;-)
