Celeste 07/15/05 06:46 am After all my observations this morning, and now that I have "settled" down a bit, I am remembering the first year of this site, July 16th when I witness the first chick to fledge from that nest. In my excitement I reported that it was Freedom, (chick 1) that fledged first. Dave after viewing the clip said it was Chick 2. I must get going now, but I am hoping that I named the right chick this year. I still look for the notch in Brook's tail, and in the early morning hours it is sometimes difficult.....I also look at "girth".....I am curious as to what Dave will come up with once he views the clips....however, one thing for sure.....a chick has fledged today, July 15th, 2005!
Pam 07/15/05 07:15 am I think Betty encouraged Haven to fly by not feeding him on demand, particularly yesterday - he was so mad, hopping around in anger and making grabs for the food and it seems a similar thing may have happened this morning but this time there was a triumphant "Well, just watch me I'll get it myself".
Shelley 07/15/05 07:22 am I can't wait for the video clip! Celeste, I really wanted to be there to witness it, too, and in fact, I was up and even on the computer at the time you saw the fledge! @&*%$ I was checking my email! That'll teach me! But I am so happy that it was you who caught it!

I wonder how long it will take her to find her way BACK to the nest...heehee! She'll need to, in order to show off properly to her sib! ;-)
karen 07/15/05 08:51 am I would think Haven based on his previous coptering skills but will look forward to seeing the clip also, and as you said it is a bittersweet moment.
Shelley 07/15/05 09:29 am I also noticed that the remaining chick has spent a good portion of this morning sitting perched on the rim of the nest. Is this her intermediary step, preparing herself for her own *launch*... I don't recall this before now
Marie 07/15/05 09:46 am I remember last year in reality checks in the Victoria area that the male would feed the fledged chick close by the nest on another light pole. Hopefully Haven is receiving a fish as I type this.
