Thread subject: New Panda out west
Name Date Message
Marie 08/08/05 11:12 pm A brand new baby panda was born out west too. On August 2nd at Sandiego zoo is found the little one. Google.....panda cam Sandiego zoo and you will find it.
Yet another miracle in captivity. This one is 5 weeks younger than the one in Washington. It was so cute watching that panda cub today. The mom went into the outside enclosure to eat bamboo and sit around for a while. She left her baby lying on its back wriggling its legs and grunting contentedly. Then they closed the hatch to this nest area so mom couldn't get back to her cub. Boy was she mad when she couldn't get back into the nest area. She yelled and banged on her door. You could hear , and so could she, her little panda cub squealing when it was being handled by humans. I guess it is necessary to handle them at this stage. Lovely to see her gently cuddle her cub later after this ordeal.
Marie 08/09/05 12:19 am Whoops I meant this new panda is 3 weeks and a bit younger not five weeks as mentioned above.
Tiger 08/09/05 03:03 am Don't they pay $1,000,000 a year just to have a panda.
Zara 08/09/05 03:58 am Thanks for that link Marie. Another one to watch!
I watched the video of staff watching the birth, amazing I could hear the newborns little squeaks.
My whole family are hooked on the panda cub at The National Zoo.
Marie 08/09/05 09:26 am Tiger, you are right. 1, 000, 000 Dollars, for each adult panda and for every cub born Sandiego zoo pays the Chinese government 500, 000. And then the babies go back to China after they are three for the rest of their lives. They then get to breed in China. Interesting! This program seems to be working. Sandiego had a new cub last year too. I believe they have had a total of three or four cubs over the years.
