flighty 08/10/05 04:08 pm Hi--
I'm new to this site and cam. How old is the Osprey ? Is that a fledgeling or an adult? I'm not familiar with the feathering of the young Ospreys. Thanks.
Marie 08/10/05 04:57 pm Welcome Flighty.
The juvenile that you are watching in the nest is a recent fledgling. The feathering of the juveniles is different from the adults. The tips to the feathers on the back( mantle) are tipped with biege, called scalloping. Their begging behaviour gives them away too.Apparently an adult landed in the nest today which I didn't see so presumably it was Dennis. The residnet male. Since we believe that the female may have left on migration already it is more than likely that the male flew in today. This young osprey is approximately almost three months old.The two young in this nest fledged July 15 and 16th. They are 7 - 8 weeks old before they fledge, ( learn to fly. ) One can gleen a lot of information if one heads to the Highlight videos offered on the left of the screen in the green band.
Pleae sign the guest book and tell us where you are from.

Welcome, flighty! Be sure to turn in next March when the cycle will begin again. Arriving at the nest, mating, laying eggs, hatching, growing & fledging. You will learn a lot.
