Well no one can accuse our Dennis of being a lazy husband. If anything he was a real house husband.
But here is a story of how the female had to do most of the work!

Here is the extract:
"Homer" is a young male, trapped this year on his nest on July 28th. He is one of three fledglings raised by the Vineyard's Osprey Mom-of-the-Year. The female here suffered through the awful spring weather on a pole that could not be more exposed to the elements, hatched at least three young, and reared them all to fledging with little support from her male, whose meager offerings of small perch paled incomparison to the 24" bluefish that the female lugged in to the nest. This was one of only three nests on the Vineyard that fledged three young.

I think I have a lazy 'mate'on the # 3 nest here in Victoria...........he doesn't seem to bring in anything but small fish and that isn't often that I have notised. Have to wait longer at this nest site before I see any action. The chick in this nest is not very active and the female looks real thin! ...Hopefully she will start to go get her own fish soon and feel comfortable leaving the one chick alone. |
