Thread subject: Listening to insects on Long Island from Xi'an
Name Date Message
cathy 08/26/05 04:31 am I accessed the nest cam in the middle of the night there, middle of afternoon here, just for the thrill of hearing night bugs on Long Island from China.

Yes, Tim - everyone here wants a motorized vehicle - just like us. Even an SUV. But most people take the bus or ride bikes where I am. There are large bike attended "parking lots" which don't take much space compared with a car parking lot. A company I visited has a bus that picks up its employees. There are company cars for company business so people don't need their own.

I think in the U.S. our lifestyle has "evolved" to need cars for shopping, transporting children here and there, getting to work. I hope China will be innovative in their growth, but there is great appeal in owning one's own transportation, if its afforable or even if its not. Roads are already clogged and smog is thick in this city of 5 million. I have heard people here don't use credit as much as in the U.S. if at all. Also, people are saving to send their children to other countries for college education. So that will inhibit use of cars.
