cathleen 11/02/05 09:45 pm Right now it looks like some kind of heron is standing in the dark on the side of the nest. I'm not really a birder so I can't tell what it might be - it's head is out of view. Maybe a great blue? Here it is.
Madeline 11/02/05 10:11 pm A refuge photographer took the picture and he says it's a Black-Crowned Night Heron. Glad you visited the site. I haven't been checking the site since the osprey have left. GOOD JOB!!!!!

Have you checked in at the Frodo cam lately? They say the chicks have fledged, but will be making apearences at the nest. I saw that chick fall over the edge yesturday, thought it going into a dive. It fell to the balconly below.
Madeline 11/02/05 10:13 pm SORRY ABOUT THE TRIPLICATE MESSAGES. TRIGGER FINGER
cathleen 11/02/05 10:37 pm YES! I just checked Frodocam after posting. What a video of the "Fall" - I can't believe you actually saw the event. That chick looks very grown up now, doesn't he? Boy, they grew up fast... It will be a long time until spring waiting for those osprey to return. I like these other cams, but I must admit to being particularly fond of the ospreys now.

BTW, Melanie, did you know that you can take out messages by clicking on "Manage your Messages" and then you can edit or delete a message you've written by its message #.
cathleen 11/02/05 10:42 pm But Melanie, I don't think it is necessarily the same heron that the refuge photographer saw. His photo was of a smaller heron in little twiggy niche at the edge of a stream. I posted my own screen capture of the live Blackwater cam with the mystery heron.
Marie 11/03/05 02:26 am It looks to me to be a great Blue heron.
Marie 11/03/05 02:37 am I just checked the web site and sure enogh those long legs belong to a Great Blue Heron. It is still standing on the nest even at this hour. Sweet dreams everybody...off to bed I go. Thankfully I don't have to Stand up all night. Herons do sit down when on eggs. Wonder why they don't sit at other times of the year when they don't have any eggs. I always see them standing with their heads tucked into their wings when asleep.
Kathy 11/03/05 10:07 am Madeline, can you post the link to the Frodocam.
Madeline 11/03/05 12:27 pm Hears the link to the Frodo Cam

http://thecouriermail.com.au/extras/frodocam/default.htm
Madeline 11/03/05 12:37 pm Ok, I stand corrected about the type of bird on the nest. And you're right, it does look like a Great Blue Heron, What in the world was I looking at then, possibly I didn't click on the correct link.

THANKS
FOB Webmaster 11/03/05 02:10 pm Madeline: On the Blackwater cam page, I had put up some photos of black-crowned night herons, but then I replaced them this morning with the photos of the Great blue heron that was on the nest last night.

That's why you saw two different herons. :-)

Lisa
Madeline 11/04/05 02:58 am At least I know that I'm not seeing things now Lisa. thanks
Marie 11/04/05 09:17 am There is possibly a bonded pair of eagles on the osprey nest right now at Blackwater.Looking good!
