Thread subject: Ducks

||My husband has been watching these HUGE flocks of ducks on the bay, & trying to find out what they are. He looks in our bird book, watching them with his scope & my binoculars. I think we'll have to get a GOOD bird book.
This is the bay at Hecksher Park (East Islip, LI) and the ducks are mostly black - or dark - with a large white spot on the side of the "face."
Tim, why don't you take a quick drive down there after work. They've been there for 3 days, now. It's the parking field after the pool area. Tell me if you go & see them.

||? COMMON GOLDENEYE. or ? EIDERS .
If possible Nancy, we need to know the relative size.
Even Puffins have big white patch on their face.

Some pictures of various ducks: common goldeneye, barrows goldeneye, bufflehead have white patches on their heads.

||Or could they be scoters, surf or velvet?
||12/16/05 10:29 am
||PS. We get very excited if we see a surf scoter here. Our common scoters are plain black. All scoters dive for shellfish and moluscs, they are usually seen in huge rafts about half a mile offshore.
I dont think they will be eiders as they dont really have a spot and the males are while with greenish heads.
What about the shape of the head and bill?.
