Thread subject: Long Island Osprey Today-Sunrise Highway and Werthheim

||Like Rich I passed the two osprey nests on Sunrise Highway between Sayville and Great River. I have decided to call these osprey, "urban osprey"....They were busy flying to their nests with twigs etc., but why they come back to those nests is beyond me. Such confusion of traffic, noise etc.
Going it was "tolerable", on the way home with rush hour and trucks is another story. Yet, they were sitting on their nests looking down at us "crazy humans" going and coming!
I did check out the nest in Wertheim on the walking path for visitors. The female was sitting in the nest gently chirping, (like our Betty), and lo and behold her mate was carrying a fish to her. My husband was too close to the nest,(I kept whispering to him to move), and I noticed the male kept circling the nest until we were out of site peeking behind a tree till he delivered his meal to his ladylove. While at Wertheim, we spoke to a gentleman who was visiting from Florida. He told us that in Orlando, where his lives during the winter, that many osprey have their nests on the ground because of the hurricanes in the Fall. I know when I was in Orlando in February, I was shocked to see all the down trees, even in "pristine" Disneyworld!
I also went down "Old Stump Road" and saw osprey soaring above the creek on our first beautiful spring day. I would like to think they were "our" Betty and Dennis.

||Great scouting today Celeste. It somehow adds to the flavour when one goes out to see the real thing.I could see you suggesting to your hubby "time to get out of sight so the male could bring in his prise for his ladylove"......no reports yet of OSPREY in my neighborhood...where are they all??? Weather here is cold, windy and WET!

||This morning I saw 4 Ospreys, 2 on or near each nest on Sunrise Hwy.
Last Night I saw 5 Ospreys, the two in Great River, one on the nest, one on the wireto the West.
I saw 3 Ospreys flying South-West across Sunrise Hwy. not in formation, but all within several hundred feet of eachother.
