Celeste 04/14/05 04:19 pm Today I drove to Orient Point checking all the nests from the main road to the State Park. Many nests were occupied, and there were several that showed no signs of occupants, (no nesting material.) I noticed that each nest that had occupants, whether it was one osprey in the nest or the male and female, none of the osprey were sitting....hence I am assuming that these nests didnot have any eggs. At Orient State Park there are several occupied nests, but there is one in particular right off the main road in the park which you can really get a close look. I didn't walk down the path to the nest as last year I got too close and they gave their alarm calls for me to leave. However, this time we pulled the car off the road and sat and observed for a while. The female when I first saw the nest was standing and chirping a distress call.....We looked up and saw two osprey circling the nest....The male flew in (her mate) and immediately stood next to the female with draped wings. The intruding osprey continued flying back and forth in circles. There were the similar distress calls we hear at "our" nest. Finally the intruder left, and the male in the nest decided he would mate, (full tilt by the way). After the mating he immediately flew away leaving the female standing and just staring out after him. Long Island weather today was spectacular. The ocean was blue and glistening, and sky was cloudless. It was a perfect Osprey-Day!
Lori 04/14/05 10:10 pm Celeste don't you just love the way the male seems to "love 'em an leave 'em"! Sounds like you had a great afternoon; how was the traffic heading out east this time of year? Maybe our new young couple will do ok this year. Sounds like they are not the only "new" kids on the block either.
Marie 04/15/05 04:33 am Ah Celeste, a Marie kind of day... the colour BLUE everywhere...and a celebration of Nature and a reaping of the joy she brings.
Celeste 04/15/05 05:42 am No traffic Lori....best time of the year......beach was empty.....roads too......some construction on the road near Greenport.
