We have often seen how ospreys fight for a nest and in general an osprey (male or female) will prefer a partner that is good at driving off intruders.
At Loch Garten this year we seem to be seeing an example of what happens when the male is a bit of a wimp. The resident male, Henry, did not come back and it seems that EJ was once again forced to pair up with the ex-husband viz. VS.
However just as EJ laid her first egg VS was easily driven off by one or two intruders. However these males do not seem experienced and do not seem to know that female ospreys need fish.
EJ was forced to abandon the egg and go to fish. However she later laid a second egg even though it was not incubated. Yesterday I noticed that something seem to damage the eggs.
Yet today it seems like EJ has laid another egg.
So it seems that once started an osprey must keep on laying eggs regardless of the situation.
See this pic of the today's egg.

Yes that certainly seems to be the case....and also once again, another example how from one year to the next and osprey nest can change! |

It shows that when an osprey has a good reliable partner then it is a good idea to stick with them.
