Thread subject: Size of nest
Name Date Message
Tiger 04/25/05 05:11 pm Have you noticed how small the nest here is compared to say the Woods Hole nest. Indeed most nests seem to be bigger than this one.
Celeste 04/25/05 05:31 pm I think it's the camera angle......."our" nest is as big as the nest in Woods Hole.......
Tiger 04/25/05 05:37 pm Well if you compare the size of an osprey to the size of the nest then there is a big variation. Maybe they have very small ospreys at Woods Hole!
Marie 04/25/05 05:49 pm Tiger....this nest has been addded to for 20 plus years. I believe DaveS answered a thread earlier in the year about the age and size of the DPOF nest. It really is quite deep.
Tiger 04/25/05 05:54 pm I am not talking about depth of the nest...I cannot judge that. I am just talking about the area of the nest.

DaveS 04/25/05 06:11 pm Tiger, the area of the nest depends partly on the size of the platform and a lot on the pair using it. I looked at the archived pictures from 2004 and it seems to me the nest looked similar to the Woods Hole nest. Keep in mind, also, that the Woods Hole nest is north of the DPOF nest by a bit (20 miles or so) and the wood that is available in that area is more of the larger driftwood you can see. The DPOF birds have access to a more varied lumber supply! Still, the DPOF pair this year have quite a different idea of what they want their nest to be.
