Thread subject: Aereating the Nest
Name Date Message
Anne 05/16/05 05:21 pm I am a recent convert to osprey watching so please excuse me if this question appears naive. I have noticed both birds frequently burrowing into the material on the floor of the nest, underneath the eggs. Someone has mentioned that they are aereating the eggs. Is this correct and why do they do this please?
Tiger 05/16/05 05:24 pm A question I have almost asked a few times. I have not got an answer.
Sarah Brown 05/16/05 05:46 pm I wondered a couple of weeks ago if there is a flea/insect issue
Marie 05/16/05 05:48 pm Hi Anne...I don't believe it is aereating the eggs, but the base of the nest material around the eggs. Perhaps the weight of the bird incubating and the eggs compact the 'soil' too much so if they fluff it up it will hold the heat better etc.....a flat surface may not be the ideal surface for the eggs...WHO KNOWS...just a humble guess on my part...
DaveS 05/16/05 06:06 pm Marie, I think you are right. I also think that the material in the nest bowl gets very hard when it dries out and the birds need to soften it so the eggs don't move as much and are less likely to crack. Make any sense?
JoJo 05/16/05 09:07 pm I also wondered about the poking activity, and aerating sounds like a very logical answer. I also wondered about Betty shaking her head so much; I do not remember last year's Betty doing that so frequently. I wonder if the gnats are bad. They are awful here in Richmond this year. They sting like crazy! I have had three swollen eyelids from where they have managed to get me in my eye/orbit when I was working in the garden and my hands were so dirty I couldn't bat the blessed things away. They are so painful and so annoying! I found myself shaking my head like Betty!
Marie 05/17/05 02:41 am Hello Dave ...so nice to see you sharing your thoughts with us again and am so pleased you thought much the same as I did. Your ideas on any subject are most welcome.
Anne 05/17/05 05:06 am Thanks Marie, that makes sense.
