For those of you who are new to this site and osprey-mania, last year Cecelia, Nancy L. and Celeste and perhaps other posters here went to hear David Gessner speak. He published a book that many of us enjoyed reading: Return of the Osprey. I certainly loved that book - it would not be an overstatement to say "it changed my life". He wrote about his struggles with his own identity as a writer, and how he learned to watch ospreys and his interesting experiences trying to understand them better. I believe he was involved in a documentary about osprey migration with the BBC, in which he followed ospreys south from Woods Hole to their wintering place in Columbia. The documentary has not been shown yet. Not only that, but he attended the gathering last summer at the Puleston's with osprey-watchers and said in effect that we are documenting behaviors over time as they have never been documented before. So I recommend the book, and viewing the Archived Still Pictures link to the left to see Gessner and the DPOF observers.
Celeste 05/21/05 07:05 pm You are so right Cathy....Gessner's book is "magical".....It was thrilling to meet him and those of us who were there were all delighted to discover that we (all of us which includes those observers who were not at the gathering), in some way might be contributing to a "new" book on osprey behaviors!
For those of you who are new to this site.....it had never been witnessed before a "feeding" of a dead chick...which is archived from last season. Though difficult to watch at the time, according to Gessner, we were probably the first observers to witness such an occurence .
Marie 05/21/05 09:26 pm Indeed a wonderful book.......
I so enjoyed David Gessners style of writing.
Looking forward to his next book.....
Cecilia 05/21/05 09:45 pm And...in the new book he is writing there may be a surprise...one of our "regulars" may be mentioned!!! That's all I'll say for now...you'll have to buy the book to find out :-)
