Thread subject: Chick 1... The bully
Name Date Message
Zara 05/27/05 12:17 pm It's 5pm here I have just been watching the chicks. Number 1 is such a bully. It attacked chicks 2 and 4 really viciously, for a moment I thought 4 was a gonner, just wonder how long it can survive that treatment! Poor little thing. Chick 1 even bit the adults foot!!
RonS 05/27/05 12:35 pm Hi, Zara. As we have learned from prior years' observations, the aggression in the nest can be very extreme. In human terms, it is cruel, heartless, relentless and totally brutal. In osprey terms, chicks will be chicks. It is very difficult to watch, but the survival of the species is paramount. It certainly gives a vivid and edgy meaning to the term "pecking order".
Tiger 05/27/05 01:50 pm Number 1 chicks quickly discover that the best way to ensure a good dinner is to give the other chicks a good pecking and persuade them that they were not really hungry after all.

# 1 last year gave some frightful peckings to #3 in particular. #3 did have the last laugh by flying first and using this new weapon to carry off dinner!

It is an arms race!
