Thread subject: NPR/Fresh Air & how birds learn to sing
Name Date Message
Melanie 05/31/05 04:17 pm Interesting re-broadcast on Monday's Fresh Air with Donald Kroodsma from Cornell who has written a book about how birds learn to sing. He discusses sonograms, "neighborhood" dialects, and birdie babbling. Didja know, for instance, that songbird chicks have to be taught what to sing and they are not genetically imprinted? Who knew? You can listen to the re-broadcast on-line - it's 26 minutes long.

Anne 05/31/05 04:20 pm Did he say anything about cuckoos, who never see their parents?
Melanie 05/31/05 04:33 pm Nope - they specifically discussed the Common Yellowthroat, Eastern and Martha's Vineyard Chickadees, barred owls, wood thrushes, and Bewick's Wrens
