Thread subject: Betty's eating

Grace 06/10/05 12:14 pm You know when you're on a plane listening to the blurb about emergency stuff, and they tell you that if you're travelling with a small child and the oxygen masks drop down to put yours on, then help your child? Every time I see Betty chowing away on a fish while the chicks wait, I think of that. She has to keep herself healthy in order to keep them healthy. The amazing power of instinct.
Nancy L 06/10/05 01:23 pm Interesting observation.
Tiger 06/10/05 04:13 pm Oh no.....it is Dennis first....then Betty.....then #1 and finally #2

:)

RonS 06/10/05 05:07 pm I believe the general pattern is the male is first in that he eats the head of the fish, next is the femal and finally the chicks, usually #1 followed by #2. The male then flies off with the reainder of the fish if there is any left. However, this year we have seen Dennis bring in a whole fish and suspect that Betty may have caught her own fish on occasion.
Cecilia 06/10/05 06:17 pm We don't suspect any more Ron, we know!!!...Celeste & Tiger saw Betty bring in a live one this morning.

Betty certainly has been able to eat substantial amounts of fish this year, due to Dennis' excellent providing skills, but if things were not so plentiful she would almost starve herself to feed her chicks, at least according to Poole and BNA. The male, on the other hand, will eat what he wants even if his mate is screaming for fish. This Dennis has seemed to be very generous since the chicks hatched.
Tiger 06/10/05 08:19 pm Yes but we are left with the mystery of the incubation period.

Betty must have had a secret stash of fish......or else when Dennis turned up with NOTHING he really had dropped off a fish somewhere.
