Anne 06/12/05 09:27 am One of the Peebles Osprey nests has four chicks being fed as at 9th June. Wonder if the parents will manage to fledge four young.
Pam 06/12/05 05:35 pm I have read that it is unusual for ospreys to lay four eggs, considering we had four both this year and last I take that with a large pinch of salt. However, I would think it would be very unusual for four to fledge and it will be interesting to hear of the progress in the Peebles nest Anne.
Anne 06/12/05 05:48 pm Yes I agree- will keep my ear to the ground.
Tiger 06/12/05 06:37 pm Well it can be done. In a pic from 2003

and the same pair repeated the feat in 2004. Maybe they are doing it again right now!
Matt 06/12/05 06:42 pm In 2003 and 2004 Dennis and Betty had 4 eggs. This year's Dennis and Betty also had 4 eggs. It seems to be uncommon, but we've had 3 successive years of 4 eggs (just laying them, not surviving). And in all 3 years, all 4 have hatched, though 2 survived 2003, 3 survived in 2004, and 2 are now surviving. Had the original Betty and Dennis from '03 and '04 used this nest again, it is possible that the chance of all 4 chicks surviving would have been increased due to their history. But that is all speculation of course.
