Thread subject: Headless fish
Name Date Message
june 07/16/07 06:49 pm Why are most of the fish headless? Does Dennis get them from a fish store? If so I hope he gets them fillet too. Serioulsy, what happens to the heads?
Sir Lance 07/16/07 06:56 pm I have read that raptor males eat the head off the fish to protect their young from live fish in the nest..
Mickey 07/16/07 07:02 pm Dennis eats the head. These birds waste nothing.Even the tail gets eaten. I think its been said that the head doesnt hold as much protein (anyone?)
Then the rest I say is speculation. But I think its dead on.The head is removed to give his honey easier access to the tender, most nutritious fish. She then can feed her chicks faster, thus spending the least amount of time off of them when its cold, raining or both. Of course thats when shes brooding. Why he does it now? I have no clue because clearly all 3 can feed themselves.Head and all.
Hope that helps.
june 07/16/07 07:38 pm Thanks, That's kinda what I thought but it just seemed strange.
Erik 07/16/07 08:15 pm Well when the fish arrives in the nest headless, you have to remember that you find most of the fish between the "Head & the Tail" !!
terryo 07/16/07 09:26 pm The osprey instinctively knows to eat the fish head-first so the fins don't open up inside them.
Anne 07/17/07 06:41 am The head contains the most nutritious part of the fish, namely the brains. That is another reason why the male eats it.
DaisyG 07/17/07 08:42 am I'm with Anne that the head is the most nutritious part.

Tsk! I always equate it with dad getting the skin off the rice pudding! :)
Anne 07/17/07 09:59 am With nutmeg!
Pam 07/17/07 11:08 am Some of the males I know definitely need more brains....
Anne 07/17/07 12:23 pm Are you talking about Ospreys Pam?!
DaisyG 07/17/07 01:39 pm LOLOL Pam! :))

Yes, with nutmeg Anne!
