Nancy L 01/18/10 11:32 am This morning on our feeder with nuts, there was a male downey woodpecker attached to the side, not moving, for at least 25 minutes! I thought it was dead, but then it was gone (& not on the ground dead). Do/can they sleep on the side of the feeder/tree like that?
clyde 01/18/10 02:25 pm I don't know about trees, but I've seen downeys exhibiting that same behavior on our feeder many times. Made me wonder if they're lulled into a reverie by the smell of so much easy-to-grab food in one spot.
Madeline 01/18/10 04:46 pm LOL Clyde! Nancy, maybe there was a hawk just sitting in the trees minding his own business, but enough to keep the woodpecker still.
clyde 01/18/10 10:13 pm But I was serious.
Nancy L 01/19/10 10:35 am Yes, Madeline, friends last night told me it could be a hawk in the area & the bird 'plays dead.'
