Thread subject: Barn owl nest box in California
Name Date Message
Shelley 03/18/10 09:33 am I discovered this cam about 2 days ago. It's beautiful. The guy in whose yard the box is set up put it up 2 years ago but the owls only took up residence this past January. She is currently sitting on 5 eggs (laid 6 but she ate one that had gone bad). Yesterday, I listened to a live broadcast the host did with a 4th grade classroom. The kids asked terrific questions and while we were watching, Molly stood up and gave a delightful (!) performance: she finished off her breakfast of rabbit! All that was left were the 2 feet hanging out of her mouth, which she actually did gulp down. Apparently, she doesn't digest bones and fur but will regurgitate them later and that will be used as nesting material!!

Anyhow, if you scroll down a bit, and click on *more*, on the lower right side, there is a wealth of info there. These eggs are due to begin hatching any time now. Dad, McGee does visit and bring her meals. They *bond* (I suspect that euphemism is used for the sake of the minors watching...;-). She does go out occasionally to stretch her wings, as well.

Pam 03/18/10 11:13 am Oh....just looked in to see her swallowing the back half of a rabbit, both its big legs sticking out of her beak.....I think I could go off owls..... !!
martyc35 03/18/10 12:39 pm Well, six eggs must qualify for a Fibber McGee closet. I hope Molly doesn't greet McGee with the old, " Tsk,tsk, tain't funny, McGee." Some of us would fall over in a pique of nostalgia:-).
