Thread subject: Lily the Bear and Hope Update (Hope again found)
Name Date Message
Celeste 06/03/10 05:15 am I thought I would reintroduce this thread again. I find this situation intriguing because as osprey watchers we are used to the fact that there is no intervening once a nest is under way. It's been a hard pill to swallow, particularly for us the first year of the DPOF cam. As I follow this ongoing saga of Hope, it does enlighten the pros and cons of a situation such as this. They are learning many things about bears because of this cam that were not known before and today's article does discuss their feelings about intervening. The article is below the cam.

HOPE
Shelley 06/03/10 06:44 am How worrying, these turn of events. It sounds that they did see her again around noon but not since. I think their thoughful and careful consideration of the options is good. But it is still tough, isn't it? I do hope Hope makes it
Pamela 06/03/10 12:51 pm Celeste, it was such a relief to me reading the article you posted. It illustrates not only a scientific view, but a human one as well considering the options the biologists have made.
Anne UK1 06/06/10 03:46 pm Poor little Hope seems to have had a tough time of it lately. So strange because up until the last week or so Lily seems to have been the perfect Mum.

Personally, I think they're doing absolutely the right thing here, supplementing the food supply and observing but not removing the cub from her natural home. But what tough decisions to have to make. All you can really be sure of is that there will always be divided opinions on what should or shouldn't be done.
