Thread subject: Mail delivery halted in Calgary
Name Date Message
Shelley 09/02/10 09:25 pm I heard this on the radio news yesterday but try as I might, I couldn't find an online link to the story. But here's a summary of what happened. Apparently, there was a hawk's nest (they never actually said what kind of hawk) in a tree near some residences. The adult birds must have felt that the humans below were too close and they began to dive bomb them, especially the mailman. So, in order not to cause further distress [to birds or humans!], mail delivery has been temporarily suspended. They said that the birds would be migrating soon and mail delivery will resume then.

I can only guess that the people will have to pick up their mail at the local post office until then.
Melanie 09/02/10 11:21 pm Sounds like peregrines. They are not welcoming to human presence although they often deliberately build their nests on buildings. How conflicted is that?
Shelley 09/06/10 08:16 am UPDATE:

This story just won't go away. The final item on the radio news just now said that mail should resume tomorrow. Apparently, the mailman had resorted to wearing a bike helmet, which was actually BROKEN by the hawk. It was at that point that the decision to stop the door-to-door delivery was made. Officials have said that although the hawks have still be seen in the neighbourhood, they say the male should be leaving for migration any day now and so, mail delivery will resume tomorrow, (this is what cracked me up), with supervision. An escort! Bwahaha. If they see that it is still a safety issue, they will hold back another few days.

Can you believe this?! ;-)
Melanie 09/07/10 09:59 am Reminds me of the line from Jaws - "You're gonna need a bigger boat"!
