Thread subject: Selling off Britain's natural world?
||09/15/10 08:21 am
||Crown Jewels of Britain's landscape could be sold off
Any of our British friends worried about this? It doesn't sound good. What the heck is going on over there.

||Oh yes I am very worried about this. I saw a newspaper headline about it some time back. Yes it is all to do with reducing the deficit which as you probably know is huge. Not quite as huge as in the USA but big all the same.

||Oh, dear. That is very disturbing. Over here they don't even pretend that such moves are to reduce the deficit. They just give away huge treasures of nature and other resources, such as public broadcasting, to big corporations for their profit. We, the people, and nature itself, get very little in return. I sound like a Communist, don't I? But I'm not; the communists do even worse things to nature.

||It's a disturbing trend -- closing or selling off protected land as soon as the deficit becomes an issue.
We're seeing it here. California and other states trying to close parks and withdraw their funding to reduce the deficit -- even if the parks are bringing in money to the community.
But then parks can't really speak up and protect themselves, so they make an easy target.

||You are right of course, Lisa. I was thinking of federal reserves, as in Alaska, but the state reserves are also in danger. Great Britain has so little left to preserve, it just seems a crying shame not to be able to protect it.
