Thread subject: Interesting Report of an Osprey Taking A Blue Crab
Name Date Message
Tiger 11/20/10 10:41 am There is an interesting report on BirdForum of an osprey taking a blue crab. See Osprey Takes Blue Crab
Pam 11/20/10 11:56 am Even the Osprey looks surprised with what he has caught ! amazing....
martyc35 11/20/10 01:07 pm Yes, the pic of the osprey looking down at the crab while carrying it off is priceless. Hey, what the?!
Thanks for that, Tiger. I think our local ospreys might have hung around a bit longer if they'd known our crab season was opening a little early this year. Just opened in San Francisco, but the ospreys went south a while ago.

cathleen 11/20/10 01:21 pm Great pics. It seemed to me the osprey was trying to figure out what is the aerodynamically efficient way to hold a crab, since it is so natural to reposition a fish to be aerodynamic.
Kelly 11/20/10 06:14 pm Too funny! Wonder how it got on with the eating part of the task? :)))
Tiger 11/20/10 07:07 pm That is exactly what I was thinking Kelly.
Celeste 11/21/10 06:40 am Or if the crab grabbed the osprey's leg. Once they get a hold of you its not pleasant:-)
DaisyG 11/21/10 07:43 am LOLOL Celeste :)))
Melanie 11/21/10 11:07 am Notice the orange eye and scalloping on the feathers - that was a juvie who caught the crab. Probably thinking "Wow - Dad never told me what to do with these".
