Thread subject: Western Meadowlark in my yard...
Name Date Message
martyc35 11/20/10 03:37 pm Well, I was all excited about the Northern flicker a short time ago, but when a Western Meadowlark landed out front just ahead of the robins today, I actually got up out of my chair. Couldn't get to the camera in time to catch him, but this is what they look like:LINK.
It's not that they are rare here in the West; they are in fact quite common, but they don't usually hang out in town or even the suburbs. He must have just been passing through and stopped in with the other birds for a snack. I can remember being taught to mimic his song when I was in the third grade. This is the Oregon state bird, so we were required to learn about it. Made my day, all these many years later!

Pam 11/21/10 07:20 am What a gorgeous bird and a very unusual song too. So are you going around whistling his tune now Marty?
martyc35 11/21/10 11:29 am I know I'm getting quite old when I can remember my third grade teacher's name, Mrs. Hoyes, and the way she taught us to remember the song: "I am a meadowlark-" (awk). We all had to sing it in unison. She always read out our full names when calling the roll, and one poor kid had to take it every day: Sebastian Bartholomew Burkhartsmeier, she would fairly scream, and we all would ache with not quite suppressed laughter, except poor Sebastian, of course. She was a very nice lady, but quite insensitive about the names, I think.

Nancy L 11/21/10 12:02 pm Interesting, Marty. I wonder where Bartholomew is now? Do you have any class reunions?
martyc35 11/21/10 12:30 pm Yes, we have had reunions, but somehow I managed to miss them. I put his name into a search engine once, but I never found him. If he had any sense, I think he would have changed his name.

Celeste 11/22/10 04:30 pm I loved that your teacher taught you about birds! And learning its song, how could one ever forget? Sweet memory!
