Shelley 01/23/11 02:33 pm Thanks, Marty. What she says in her opening paragraph: "Those were drought years, and things were mightly lean. This year, the rains are falling, the creeks are running, the grass is green - and the birds are back." reminds me of a book I read last year called *Refuge* by Terry Tempest Williams. Different part of the country, different situation but yet, something poignant reminds me of it. It is a beautifully written book, important and sad yet remarkable, too.
martyc35 01/23/11 02:47 pm Reminds me of a documentary I saw on restoring some wetlands in Iraq, wiped out by Saddam Hussein and now being put back. The birds came back there, too. I noticed that Williams participated in Ken Burns's PBS series on America's National Parks, and he used a lot of poetic quotes from her. That's a great series, if you havn't seen it yet. Tonight, I get to see David Attenborough's doc on exotic Birds of Paradise, New Guinea. Heck, I'll miss some of the Australian Open to see that!

Shelley 01/23/11 05:10 pm Oh thanks, I will look for it. I loved several of Burns' other docs but haven't seen this one you mention. It speaks well and of high praise for both of them that he quotes her and she took part in the doc itself. Kudos to them!

I got the Attenborough DVD of birds a few years ago for Christmas (I think it's 4 disks). Fabulous!
Celeste 01/26/11 03:11 pm Sounds and looks so perfect for all involved, and it's a shame it might all change.
