Thread subject: Shelley--The necklace question & a funny pic

martyc35 05/03/11 11:04 pm In a thread below, we were talking about the dark necklaces some male ospreys have, and I mentioned those in Finland. I just rediscovered a little album I had at Photobucket from the 2007 Nauvo season, and here is a pretty good pic of the male there, about to mount the female, and he has a very dark necklace:
PIC.
In that same album, I found this funny screen capture of the male descending to his mate: PIC Obviously, I'm not good at timing the screen captures:-).

Shelley 05/04/11 06:44 am Lol!

Great pics!

The *male necklace* sure messes up our ID theories, though, doesn't it?
DaisyG 05/04/11 12:26 pm LOL great captures Marty :)
Yes it does make ID very difficult.
I would love to know why they are so dark and American/Canadian male ospreys are so light. There has to be some sort of reason for it.
martyc35 05/04/11 01:10 pm Yes, but evolutionary "reasons" can be very hard to figure out, especially when there is no fossil evidence for the feature one is studying. Any speculation is just that, pure speculation. Glad you enjoyed thos pics.
